In this post 1926 image the trolley, once hailed as the best and most modern form of transportation, has given way to the age of the automobile. The landscape also shows signs of the modern age. In the right corner of the picture is the 1848 "Kirkland Block," on the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets, the only remaining block of several built by Harvey Kirkland. The neighboring buildings are also by Kirkland. But moving down the street a bit, one sees a distinctly modern structure, the Northampton Post Office.
