Solomon Williams (1700-1776) was a minister in Lebanon, Connecticut, when he preached this sermon on Tuesday, August 4, 1741, on the occasion of Eunice's second visit to New England since the day of her captivity in 1704. People came from as far as twenty miles to witness "this strange unusual occasion." Williams and other members of the family had long been baffled by Eunice's conversion to Catholicism and prayed that she would re-join the one "true" religion and return home to New England. Reverend Williams translated Eunice's willingness "of her own Accord to make a Visit to her Friends" as a positive sign that the many prayers offered over many long years had been answered. His hopes proved hollow ones, however, and Eunice soon returned to her home in Canada.
