Dressed in a blue silk gown with an empire waist, white lace trimmings, and a matching turban, nineteen-year-old Rhoda Smith posed for her portrait. Rhoda was the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Reuben Smith. She was born in Northfield, Massachusetts in 1775, and was a student at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield. She married Henry Bardwell of Deerfield in 1807 and died in 1818 at age 43. The portrait is attributed to painter Charles Lyman (1778-1814).
