Springfield, Massachusetts is the county seat of Hampden County and is the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The initial settlement of Springfield began in 1636 on the west side of the Connecticut River near the mouth of the Agawam River, but soon relocated to the east bank. Originally called Agawam, the settlement was renamed Springfield in 1640, and incorporated the following year. The city was a bustling center of industry in the early 20th century. Springfield is the birthplace of both Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and the game of basketball. This view of Main Street shows the a busy downtown.
