Farm areas that had never known railroad service suddenly discovered they might have a trolley car line. By 1904 trolley-car lines reached northward along the Connecticut River Valley, connecting nearly every major town. The cars offered fast, regular, cheap, silent, and safe (note the safety fender on the front) travel to the nation's country areas, especially New England and the upper Midwest. What happened to such a good system? The car and the oil companies bought many of the lines and then put them out of business.
