Many Americans at the turn of the twentieth century were fascinated with the people, customs and objects of the early colonial period. The move away from making things by hand helped fuel interest in what many Americans imagined to have been a simpler, more familiar world. This carefully posed photograph reveals as much about early twentieth-century interests as it does about Puritan women and their role in colonial society.
