By 1895 the 57-year-old monument to honor the dead of the Bloody Brookmassacre was not in good shape. The attack on Captain Lothrop and his men in 1675 during King Philip's War was an important moment in the history of the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Now, seeing that the grounds around the monument and the monument itself need attention, the Village Improvement Association of Deerfield has started a project to raise money to fix up the space. To help raise the proper feelings from the crowd they have included the poem by Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), entitled "The Lamentable Ballad of Bloody Brook".
