Stephen West Williams was the son and the grandson of doctors. He studied at King's College (Columbia University) in New York City, and with his father. He returned to Deerfield to be a doctor after an apprenticeship in the Berkshires. His handwritten notes report his medical questions and treatments and list the symptoms and treatments that he tried. This example was recorded about 1815. Dr. Williams had a wide practice, lectured a lot, and published books on family history and on medical law as well as articles in medical and scientific journals.
