In 1781 Massachusetts created two kinds of militia: the "training band," referred to in this document, who met and drilled regularly; and the "alarm list" to appear, with arms, once a year. This notice of 1792 alerts Elihu Hoyt of Deerfield that he is to appear, armed, "as the law directs," at the parade ground near the Meeting house on September 3, September 12, and September 13. The men were responsible for their own equipment.
