In the days before typewriters, agreements like this land purchase were written by hand by the town record keepers and signed by buyers and sellers with witnesses watching. On January 12, 1838, Seth Sheldon (1787-1860) of Deerfield, Massachusetts promised to pay one thousand dollars for certain lands and buildings owned by his neighbors, father and son Zur (1760-1844) and Alvah (1801-1843) Hawks.
